Notes from Jacksonville's stunner at UF

Courtesy of Atlantic Sun director of communications Eric Moyer, here are a few notes from Jacksonville's 71-68 overtime win at No. 20 Florida:

* The Jacksonville victory is the first for the Atlantic Sun against a ranked team since Nov 10, 2007, when Mercer beat O.J. Mayo and No. 18 USC, 96-81.
* The Gators had won 20 of the last 21 meetings between the schools, including nine straight. JU’s last win came on Dec. 21, 1994 (68-67).
* The Dolphins were 0-9 against ranked teams in the Cliff Warren era.
* Since March, JU owns wins at Arizona State (in the NIT), at Auburn and at Florida.
* Jacksonville is the first A-Sun team to post two wins against major-conference opponents in the same season since Mercer pulled it off in 2008-09 (won at Alabama and at Auburn).

Fantastic finish coming up in Miami

MIAMI -- This is set up to be quite a fourth quarter. Wild runs have marked this game since the Mavs opened the game on a 14-2 spurt.

In the third quarter, the Mavs rolled off 10 consecutive points to lead 55-48 and Miami answered with a 13-0 run to lead 61-55.

LeBron James scored all eight of his points in the period, first hitting a 3-pointer from the corner, then another and he drained a buzzer-beater from the top of the key to give the Heat a 68-65 lead.

Miami is trying to extend its 12-game win streak, while the Mavs have a five-game road win streak on the line.

Dwyane Wade has 14 points and Chris Bosh has 12, but just two in the third.

Dirk Nowitzki leads all scorers with 21 points. Caron Butler, who has been defending James most of the night, put up nine points in the third quarter and has 13 in the game.

NBA Salary Cap Will Cost LeBron James Over $28M This Season

AP
When LeBron James took his talents to South Beach, he accepted a 2010-11 salary of $14.5 million, approximately $2.1 million less than the maximum amount he was eligible for under the NBA's rules.

This was done to fit the salaries of James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh under the salary cap.

But this is only the tip of the iceberg in determining how much the NBA's salary cap will cost James this season.

Based on Wins Produced, a metric that measures how many wins an individual player contributed to a team, James was worth 27.2 Wins in 2009-10. And if we look at total NBA salaries last season, NBA teams paid approximately $1.6 million for each win.

That translates to a value of $43.8 million for James last season, making him worth $29.3 million more than his $14.5 million salary. And that only considers his on-court contributions. The LeBron brand is worth millions more to the Heat off the court.

But even these figures are probably underestimating how much money LeBron is losing under the salary cap system. The $1.6 million paid per win is calculated using the current system. Certainly that number would go up without a cap.

If we estimate that non-capped salaries would be 25% higher, that would place a value of $2.0 million on each win. With that figure, James would have been worth $54.4 million last season, or $39.9 million more than he is making this season.
