Howard Stern Contract Boosts Sirius XM: Is He Worth His Pay?

December 9, 2010, 10:10 AM ET

Prices for Sirius XM Radio are up a healthy 6.5% on news that the satellite radio operated nailed down the shock jock for another five years.

In a statement this morning the company said Stern’s new contract will run through December 31, 2015. “Under the terms of the new contract, SIRIUS XM will now have the right to transmit Howard’s exclusive programming to mobile devices. Additional terms of the contract will not be disclosed,” the statement said.

Questions about Stern reupping for another stint at Sirius seems to have been a weight on the shares lately. In a note published Wednesday Miller Tabak analyst David Joyce wrote “we reiterate our Neutral rating due to the potential loss of Howard Stern-reliant subs if he does not renew his contract.”

Last month analysts at Wunderlich Securities tried their hand at what they called “Sternomics,” in trying to suss out whether the subscribers Stern delivers are worth the compensation the company has to shovel out for the superstar radio personality:
Variables are Stern’s annual compensation, the number of listeners who would defect to a Stern streaming service or terrestrial radio, and the duration of any new contract. We assume a 70% monthly ($9+) variable cash flow contribution on each Stern fanatic and a low 1.5% churn rate. We run compensation iterations at $75mm, $100mm, and $150mm. We are neutral between a five-year contract at $100 million and losing one million customers.

Howard Stern: 5 More Years with Sirius

12/9/2010 12:35 AM PST by TMZ Staff

Howard Stern is sticking with Sirius.

With only four more days on his existing contract after this morning's show, Stern announced he'll stay on his Sirius/XM radio station for another 5 years -- and after that, he's done.

"I have come to the conclusion that the real innovators, the real geniuses are the people here at Sirius," said Stern, adding "I can say with almost certainty that this is my final five years on radio."

He didn't disclose how much he'd be getting from his new deal, except to say it was "very fair."

Stern also said the contract statuses of Howard's staff, which includes Robin Quivers, Fred Norris and Baba Booey are all still pending.

Howard Stern Contract Renewed – Yay For More Crap Like Sweet Connie Hamzy Interview

The Howard Stern contract has been renewed. Howard Stern has announced, in his own lengthy pandering fashion, that he has signed a contract for five more years of spewing garbage on Syrius XM. If you listen on a Blackberry or iPhone, don’t worry….those apps are covered in his contract as well. I gather that was important to him. He also said that “initially” he will be broadcasting in his usual 6-10 a.m. time slot, which leads me to wonder if in the future he will pollute the airwaves later in the day? Perhaps in the evening, in a primetime slot?

I’m sure I’ll get a lot of hate mail about my feelings toward Howard Stern, but really the guy nauseates me. He’s worse than Rush Limbaugh, as he seems to revel in the smuttiest things he can find. Such as his interview yesterday with aging rock groupie Sweet Connie Hamzy. That woman did not need any air time. She has a book of her lies that people can read if they want, although it’s possible that neither Stern nor his listeners are capable of reading a book all the way through.

His staff hasn’t gotten their contracts signed yet. Perhaps his little lackey Robin Quivers will not be at his side in January? If not, who would be a good replacement? I would be in favor of someone like Velma Barfield…a legendary Black Widow poisoner.
